I’m pleased to say the photos from last week’s tournament are all uploaded!
A big THANK YOU to JC Dill for her effort in getting these photos processed. Thank you also to Leyla Pepper for her help assisting us throughout the tournament.
Hey Blue!
I was a sports official for a number of years. I always make it a point to get some decent photos of the officials when I can. I’ve collected the best of the ones from the tournament into a section I call ‘The Umpire Empire’. It’s in with the rest of the teams. If you forgot the password e-mail me for help.

Want to see some great performance and club shots?

Friday night, July 20th I was at Maxwell’s in Oakland for the Strive for Music Showcase. This is the second time I’ve done this event. This time I took some lighting with me which resulted in a major improvement in the number of quality shots.
If you are a performer e-mail me if you would like some of the files for your personal use. You can also order prints or posters by going here.

Friday night I shot a gig for the folks from Strive for Music. It’s a showcase to “highlight a combination of developing artists and seasoned performers who are poised and prepared to ascend to a higher level in their career.”
Come take a look…

The lemon tree in my backyard is right outside my bathroom window. I was working at home yesterday and took a break in the afternoon. I like to make little challenges for myself and yesterday it was to get shots of the bees buzzing around the lemon tree. The light was nice, the aroma from the tree was wonderful and it provided me a nice diversion for about half an hour. I used a 70-200mm zoom lens. I shot at the high speed frame rate (8.5 per second). The real challenge is to catch the bee in flight and in focus. Finally, to get the bee in flight, in focus and facing me is truly rare. The closest I got was a little out of focus.
I shot close to 200 frames in about 20 minutes. I loaded them into Lightroom and culled down to the ones here. These are all cropped and I used Lightroom to build the gallery and upload it. The whole project took less than an hour.

This is especially nice in slideshow mode.

Saturday I went to the City. I set myself the goal of walking the entire length of California Street. This is a little under seven miles. As you may know San Francisco is almost exactly 7 x 7 miles.
My friend Stephen lives about a third of the way. I stopped off to visit and to see his garden. Stephen has talked about his garden often but I was unprepared for exactly how extensive a project it was. He has taken the terraced back end of the lot his apartment building sits on and transformed it into the most wonderful garden. The terraces are steep. Each is about 5 feet tall and quite narrow - perhaps 4 or 5 feet. To reach to top most terrace requires scrambling up a sloped buttress to stand on a 2×8 board about 25 feet above the bottom.
He has set themes for each section of the garden. One section’s theme is “native”. He has planted it with native plants and paved the walking areas with brick he dug up while building the garden. These bricks were from the first buildings on the lot that were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fires.
